Tainted Love

Before entering the Silky Doll, Damir began playing a tune. As he approached the door, he cast Detect Thoughts, then immediately cast Damir's Distraction upon Chastity as he saw her. He could see that she was noticably shaken by the effect this spell had on her. As his Detect Thoughts reached full strength, Damir began speaking to Chastity in near-perfect Elvish, following appropriate elven protocols. She maintained her composure during most of the conversation; however, when she pulled out the tokens, she pointedly stacked them and kept her hand on them, preventing Damir from taking them should he desire to adhere to proper elven protocol. Damir kept talking to her, asking her to lunch the next day at Keth Que'dat. At first, she wanted to refuse, but with Damir still chatting her up, she found herself agreeing to meet him at noon the next day. Damir then spoke to her a moment longer, and she let slip a minor faux pas about the workers at the Silky Doll (speaking of them in a non-flattering light); she covered her mouth quickly, embarrassed, but then realized she had removed her hand from the tokens. This would've allowed Damir to take them and leave, and she didn't want him to do so; she quickly slapped her hand back onto the tokens, knocking them all over the floor. Damir, ever the gentleman, helped her gather them up but did not take them; instead, he stacked them and allowed her to place her hand on them again. He finished conversing with her (she wanted to know if he really didn't sleep with the whores, which he told her she could confirm for herself by asking them). Damir then was given the tokens and proceeded into the whorehouse, theatrically handing most of them the Peregrine. Damir and Peregrine went into the whorehouse proper; Damir took groups of girls into a room to question them, and Peregrine took one at a time but only spent 10 minutes with each. Damir got some leads, but barely; Peregrine did not get anything important. Damir found out about a guy who came through the inn and checked a lot of weapons, but he was heading in the wrong direction (toward Peloria) and didn't fit the profile of the raiders. He also found out that Malicor had been a couple of times, but he never paid; he would come in, speak to the proprietor, then would leave. The rumors are that Malicor used to frequent the place but has stopped coming since he took in Emby and has not been back even though she's left. Damir also found that wizards will occasionally spend some time with Xandra when they come through town, but they don't seem particularly "fulfilled" when they leave. Aside from leads, Damir learned of some rumors from the girls; he learned that they don't like Chastity much because of her superior attitude, and there is also a rumor that the Silky Doll might start to require customers be checked for disease before they will turn tricks (to cut down on temple fees). Finally, Damir heard some rumors about an elf in Gwivonna who has closed up shop and headed out of town, but his reasons seemed to be innocuous. In the last room, some of the whores (who were very ambitious) managed to glimpse Damir's scar; one of them had heard the stories about the man who was backstabbed in Nevermoor. Damir tried to interrupt their line of thought and managed to distract them, but he still knew he had to do some damage control. He decided to come back the next night to "bid them farewell." The next morning, Damir left to meet up with Chastity at Keth Que'dat. He ordered for her, her favorite meal, and sat to wait. He also ordered two flagons of elven moon wine. When Chastity arrived, Damir was humming to himself and muttered Damir's Distraction under his breath at her. She looked flustered again, and Damir's Detect Thoughts spell registered her confustion and embarrassment. She was thinking to herself, "He's a human, you're an elf; you're all wrong for each other… get it together." Damir greeted her formally to comfort her and spoke to her for a while. She began the conversation trying to convince him discreetly that he could not really be interested in her or vice versa, but Damir interrupted her train of thought, asking if he could be frank with her. Damir tells her that he sees that she is unhappy here in town. Upon hearing this statement, Chastity's mind again erupts into a turmoil of thoughts; she is at once hotly embarrassed at letting him see this, angry at him for his perceptions, and surprised at his accuracy. She does not let these emotions reach her face, however, simply stating that her position is one of dignity and comfort and asking him how he came by these observations. Damir says, "I strive to be observant. And I have… obviously… studied elven culture extensively. Among others. And I know that what I am saying may be… uncomfortable for you to hear, but I would simply ask that you hear me out." Damir offers his friendship, nothing desired in return; this amazes and surprises Chastity, who was expecting Damir to misunderstand her or judge her; unfortunately, Damir's Detect Thoughts burned out at this moment, leaving him to rely on old-fashioned observation to tell how she would react for the rest of the meal. She begins to say that she appreciates the offer, but… and Damir interrupts her there by saying, "I have to leave town again, but I would seek permission to write to you." She sighs almost imperceptibly, thinking, and finally says (in Common), "Very well. I will… happily consider you an acquaintance." Damir tells her that he will be happy to lend a friendly ear. She, beginning to realize that she might be in over her head, states "As you do with the women at my place of employment." Damir tells her that's not exactly what he expects from her, but he believes everyone deserves a chance and most people are worth listening to when you give them that chance. Damir tells her that he would not intrude into her personal life when she says that she would not bother him with such details. She asks him to be discreet if he should see her at the Silky Doll so as not to "disturb the others" with their friendship. Chastity relaxes quite a bit at this, and they transition to lighter topics such as music and food during the meal. She discreetly gives him some tips on elven culture during the meal, and they chat nicely until the food is gone. In the process, Damir manages to slowly sip at his moonwine, only achieving a mild euphoric buzz after drinking nearly a full flagon. As they are leaving, Damir asks a favor of Chastity and is amazed and surprised by the mischevous tone in her voice when she answers him. Being very perceptive, she realizes that he and Peregrine WERE seeking specific information when they travelled to the Silky Doll yesterday night. Damir asks her to look for information on the bandits, and she agrees; she also, again being very perceptive, asks Damir if he does not want his deeds to be widely known. He confirms this, and she tells him of the rumors floating around the Silky Doll. She tells him about the scar rumor, and he takes his leave of her then, promising that he will bid her farewell before he leaves town and will write her when he reaches Tantor.
