Orbital Bodies:

  • Name: Garos
  • Star Orbited: Ceruleos
  • Type of Orbital Body or Bodies: Terrestrial
  • Brief Description of Orbital Body or Bodies: This brown, cratered world, roughly half the size of Antaras, is the smallest planet in the Antaran system (aside from those small planetoids found in the Twin Rings of Davrel). It is a blasted, volcanic wasteland orbiting roughly .46 AUs from the blue giant Ceruleos. The intense radiation from the massive blue star thoroughly overwhelms the fairly weak magnetic field of this tortured planet, sterilizing the surface and having long since blasted away whatever atmosphere the planet may once have had. If that were not enough, the two irregular and relatively massive moons, Vercet and Verceron, continue to tidally influence Garos, heating the already molten core even further. As a result, whatever portion of the crust not covered in craters from millions of years of asteroid impacts is now covered in lava. Needless to say, Garos does not support life. The planet's inhospitable environment and lack of impressive mineral resources mean that no attempt has ever been made to establish any presence on the surface.
  • Moon(s)/Satellite(s): Vercet and Verceron
  • Brief Description of Moon(s)/Satellite(s): Vercet, the inner moon, is roughly 24% the mass of Garos. Verceron is approximately 19% the mass of Garos. Both moons have highly elliptical orbits that tilt far out of orbital plane of Garos and the other planets in the system.
  • Name: Reega
  • Star Orbited: Ceruleos
  • Type of Orbital Body or Bodies: Terrestrial
  • Brief Description of Orbital Body or Bodies: This planet is the largest rocky world in the Antaran system (roughly 2.8 times the mass of Antaras). It's large size means it's core is still highly molten, and this drives an incredibly strong magnetic field. Even orbiting at .89 AUs from the blue giant, this magnetic field is strong enough to deflect nearly all of the harmful incoming stellar winds, allowing Reega to support a thriving ecosystem. The planet's generous supply of stellar radiation, coupled with a surface roughly 48% covered with liquid water oceans, lead to heavy cloud cover in the planet's oxygen-rich skies. The greenhouse effect this creates has turned Reega into a green, tropical garden filled with a multitude of unique flora and fauna. While the high gravity makes it very difficult for humans and most other intelligent species to function for extended periods on Reega, there are several outposts on the surface. Some are run mostly or exclusively by droids, and tend to be in areas set aside for farming and other agricultural pursuits. Other locations are laboratories set up for groups of scientists to study the planet and it's ecosystem (though most scientists visit only for brief periods due to the high gravity). These small, isolated outposts and farms aside, Reega is still a nearly untouched paradise in the Antaran system.
  • Moon(s)/Satellite(s): Weyfel Station, Tallal, assorted smaller moonlets
  • Brief Description of Moon(s)/Satellite(s): Though the most massive terrestrial world in the Antaran system, Reega, surprisingly, has virtually no real moons to speak of. Most asteroids and comets that come within Reega's gravitational grasp either impact on the surface or are flung out into space. The closest orbiting object of any measurable size to the planet is Weyfel station. Able to dock and accommodate various classes of transports and freighters (including refueling and repairs), this space station conducts minor trade and commerce, mainly geared towards receiving a small but steady stream of visitors who wish to see (either in orbit or through aerial or ground-based tours) the beauty of garden world of the Ceruleon system. However, the station's primary role is to house the primary research center and the scientists who study the massive green world below. Tallal, the closest natural moon to Reega, is by far the largest, though that is hardly saying much. At roughly 760km in diameter, Tallal is not quite large enough to gravitationally pull itself into a sphere. The reddish-gray rock looks to be covered with small bumps, divots, and the occasional crater, as if a giant had tried to make a ball out of clay with massive hands. Though Tallal is a captured asteroid, it orbits as a normal moon, near Reega's equator, in the same direction as the planet's rotation, and with fairly little eccentricity. All other satellites of Reega (roughly a dozen between 50m and 1.5km in diameter) are also captured asteroids. The grand size and beauty of Reega, coupled with the extremely small size and somewhat distant orbits of her moons often leads to poets and colloquially-speaking Antarans to refer to these cosmic bodies as "the beautiful grand dame" and "her timid little suitors."
  • Name: Koltare
  • Star Orbited: Ceruleos
  • Type of Orbital Body or Bodies: Terrestrial
  • Brief Description of Orbital Body or Bodies: Koltare is a planet that can be described in two words: dangerous and profitable. The last major orbital body exclusively orbiting Ceruleos, Koltare would, on paper, seem to be an ideal world for heavy colonization. At roughly 1.3 times the mass of Antaras, the difference in gravity is easily ignored for most humanoids. The planet has many large, liquid water seas, an adequate magnetic field, and an atmosphere that has been terraformed to roughly 17% oxygen and only slightly more than trace amounts of noxious gases. While the planet has some indigenous flora and fauna, most of the rather sparse plant and animal species on the surface have been introduced from Antaras or other worlds. The weather is relatively mild (due partially to weather control satellites and ground installations. Simply put, the world is somewhat challenging, but nearly ideal by most species' standards. Why then is it not covered in cities as Antaras is? The answer: Koltare orbits 1.56 AUs from Ceruleos, and asteroids thrown free from the Twin Rings of Davrel frequently cross its path. Over its history, Koltare has been subject to countless impacts that would sterilize or blast off any life that might have developed on the surface. However… millions of Antarans (though most prefer "Koltarans") live on the planet, or on stations or ships that orbit the planet. Why is this? Simply put, the planet is a mineral-rich treasure trove. Not only is the planet itself overflowing with deposits of virtually every valuable metal known to the galaxy, but the planet's position in the Ceruleon system has caused it to accumulate enough asteroids suitable for mining in its orbit to virtually make another planet. While these rocky bodies would have once impacted the surface or been flung out into space, now, a sophisticated orbital deflection and herding operation ensures that Koltare only rarely suffers a meteor impact, and those that do strike the surface rarely do much damage. What once was a collection of rocks circling the planet at every angle imaginable in a disorganized, chaotic mess has now been shepherded into a thick, wide ring system orbiting Koltare's equator. Although much of Antaras's high technology manufacturing and R&D facilities are located on Antaras itself, Koltare is a world entirely devoted to mining and manufacturing. Antaran corporate mining ships scour Koltare's ring for valuable mineral, leaving smaller chunks of rock (and a finer ring) in their wake. They then take these materials to orbital stations or manufacturing plants on the surface to be sorted and purified, converted into useful alloys, and sometimes fashioned into finished products before being shipped off to Antaras or out into the galaxy. Surface mining and manufacturing is even more intense than orbital operations, and Koltare is covered with small industrial cities and mining outposts. While the corporations use a large number of droids for the most difficult and dangerous activities, a large portion of those beings working on Koltare are flesh and blood. The somewhat dangerous and harsh environment, coupled with the nature of the work attracts a certain type of individual. While the humans living on the planet are certainly from the Antaran culture, those that come to be or are born "Koltaran" are usually a bit more rough and tumble than most Antarans. Koltarans are known, at least among Antarans, to be tough, independent, somewhat gruff, hard-working, ambitious, and fierce bargainers. An old Antaran joke goes, "If you see a Koltaran selling an off-worlder a speeder (or power converter… the items vary), you can be sure of five things. One, the off-worlder paid at least 50% more than he should have. Two, the off-worlder thinks he's getting it for 50% of what it's worth. Three, the Koltaran will carefully recount how the ore was pulled from the ground, smelted and purified to the highest quality, fashioned into components so finely made that welds and connectors are almost an afterthought, and finally assembled, by the Koltaran himself, into a speeder that will be more reliable than gravity and will outlast the mountains. Four, every word the Koltaran said is actually probably true… or he stole it off another off-worlder. Five… the Koltaran will knock anyone stupid enough to question the quality of the speeder or the Koltaran's forthrightness right on his ass."
  • Moon(s)/Satellite(s): Ring system of small moons/moonlets, interspersed amongst a much greater volume of smaller debris. Various orbital stations.
  • Brief Description of Moon(s)/Satellite(s): Koltare has no shortage of orbiting bodies. It's ring system is composed of objects ranging in size from dust to grains of sand to boulders the size of houses to a few rocks over a hundred kilometers in diameter. While there are some rocks that orbit at odd angles, most natural rocky bodies are slowly shepherded into Koltare's ring. While some of the objects orbiting the planet are large enough to be called moons or moonlets, none are generally given common names or referred to separately from the ring. This is mainly because new asteroids are added to the rings quite frequently (by astronomical terms), and large orbital bodies are even more quickly broken up into smaller objects so any mineral resources can be more easily accessed. Koltare once had a large asteroid, Renato, in orbit around it. Renato was almost large enough to be completely spherical. However, the moon's vast mineral deposits, coupled with the highly disruptive effects it's gravitational influence caused on the other orbiting debris and on Koltare itself, led the Antarans to decide to slowly cut the moon up into smaller bodies which were then eroded down further in the first major mining operations in Koltare's orbit, many centuries ago. Renato's pieces eventually made up a a significant portion of the first loose ring created around the planet. As a result, some call Koltare's ring system the Ring of Renato, though this is a somewhat colloquial expression. Koltare is also orbited by several major mining stations, and is constantly buzzing with a fleet of mining ships that swarm around the ring like insects around a field of pollen-rich flowers.
  • Name: Trillest
  • Star Orbited: Vallistal
  • Type of Orbital Body or Bodies: Terrestrial
  • Brief Description of Orbital Body or Bodies: Trillest is the first of two rocky planets to orbit the yellow star, Vallistal. Approximately 84% the size of Antaras and orbiting Vallistal at .76 AU, this rocky world's core has nearly completely cooled. It's atmosphere was once relatively thin, composed mainly of nitrogen, sulfur- and carbon dioxide. While bacterial life and even some primordial plant life was present, the planet was largely lifeless. Today, 7.1 million Antarans live on Trillest. Through a massive and extensive terraforming campaign, the atmosphere is now nearly identical to that of Antaras. A series of planetary magnetic shields deflect harmful incoming stellar radiation, and though the planet is still largely rocky, with only 10% of the surface covered in liquid water, various forms of algae, mosses, and more highly developed flora have been introduced (including a relatively small scale but highly efficient farming operations). Antaran and other galactic animal life forms have been introduced, creating a balanced, hardy ecosystem (Trillest also has a few ranching operations as well). Population centers are well built and modern. In fact, today the planet can easily support a population of 250 to 300 million Antarans (not including Trillest's moons). Why then do fewer than 8 million people live there? Because Trillest is entirely devoted to the Antaran military. Though there are several military installations on Antaras, and the planet is quite well-defended, Antarans prefer to keep the military presence on Antaras itself relatively minimal. Several centuries ago, the Antarans began terraforming Trillest to develop it into a new habitable world. Military bases appeared on the planet as soon as was feasible. However, after Antaras was invaded two centuries ago, the Antaran government made a decision to make Trillest a fortress world, a place to hold out and eventually repulse a large invading force. Though it took incredible effort, resources and time, today, Trillest is the center of the Antaran Military Command, and is covered with enough defenses to repel a massive invading fleet. Aside from distant warning outposts and patrolcraft spread around the Antaran system, as well as the fleet of warships kept stationed at Trillest, the planet's first real line of defense is a massive number of heavily-shielded and -armed automated weapons satellite platforms, spread in multiple layers to form a great cloud around Trillest and its moons. These defenses are typically all that is needed to deal with any ship short of capital scale (and even capital scale ships can be quickly overcome be the satellites' concentrated fire unless they have many ships). Past the automated satellites is an even denser field of mines surrounding the planet and it's moons. While capable of being remotely controlled, these devices tend to function on their own. They randomly change their position, though they stay within a (relatively) small area of Trillest's sky. The planet itself is covered with planetary ion cannons, planetary turbolasers, and other anti-ship weaponry. The magnetic shields that keep harmful stellar wind out of the atmosphere also form overlapping layers of protection even stronger that that of the Hoth shield. Trillest's moons have similar defenses, and any wise enemy commander would first want to eliminate the threat of the Trilleian moons before moving on the planet, for fear of being pinned between two massive batteries. On Trillest's surface, bases, outposts, and other fortified positions (obvious and concealed) dot the planet. The Antaran Army keeps most of it's troops here, and trains constantly. Farming installations and ranching operations are also tended by the military, growing food for Trillest's current population, as well as developing vast stockpiles of food in the event of a mass evacuation from Antaras and subsequent siege of Trillest. Housing for hundreds of millions of Antarans sit mostly unoccupied and waiting for just such an eventuality… and more are still being built. Since the destruction of Alderaan, the Ruling Council and the Military Command are concerned that Antaras (as a world also largely unhappy with the New Order) might one day be targeted for a similar fate. While the Death Star has been destroyed, the Empire still has an unmatchable fleet. While the military feels that Trillest could most likely survive an assault by even a large SSD led fleet, civilian casualties would be beyond unacceptable, and they would almost certainly lose every other holding in the system, including Antaras. So, it has been decided that placation and a display of relative weakness is the best way to ensure Antaras's survival. While the Ruling Council openly condemn the Rebellion and take every measure to display Antaras's loyatly to the Empire, Military Command has begun a careful campaign of subterfuge. While continuing to develop their defenses, Command is taking careful steps to conceal this buildup from Imperial eyes. Installations are "decommissioned." Weapons and equipment are made to seem poorly maintained. Fewer drills are done publicly, and the soldiers doing so are usually new recruits. "Official" strength estimates, expenditure lists and other reports are altered or buried. Imperial inspectors are shown only what Command wants them to see. Great care is taken, as Imperial spies and sympathizers are assumed to be everywhere. If Imperial agents were to uncover enough "errors" to prove a cover up, the Empire might decide to dissolve the Antaran military and political leadership, or worse. Also, the Antarans do not want to look too weak, or the same thing might happen. Command is trying to maintain a delicate balance of "not dangerous enough to be a true threat" and "dangerous enough that crushing them would be too costly."

Antaran Geography

Continents/Major Landmasses

  1. Vergesig, largest continent. Straddles equator and extends further to south than north. Southernmost point is within arctic circle; northermost point is just north of tropics. 5 very large inland seas; 2 are very oddly shaped, and 3 are clearly glacial scars.
  2. Lial, second-largest continent. Fully in northern hemisphere with southernmost point just shy of equator. Huge southern barrier reefs. 2 very large inland seas and one supercaldera.
  3. Cullahuane, third-largest continent. Directly south of Lial with no tropical regions, but extends into arctic circle. Surrounded by huge archipelago that mostly extends between it and Lial.
  4. Pacoba, arctic cap continent with some areas between Lial and Vergesig that extend slightly below arctic circle.

Interesting Locations

Major cities and key locations on Antaras itself as well as the populated parts of the Antaran system.
Note: maglevs run regularly between major cities at roughly 400 kph

Interesting and/or important locations on Antaras's largest continent

The Scar

Complex cave system with large, deep openings (including many that are completely water-filled). It's not a single massive entrance, but there are a bunch of entrances, kinda collectively known as The Scar, that can be found over about a 500 square mile range. Partially protected as natural preserves, but there are many, many mining operations around the area because of the dense concentrations of extremely rare compounds and ores in the area. Some areas are restricted due to radon that seeps from the deep caves, but those caverns are clearly marked to keep tourists away.

Large areas of it are open (sorta like those South American sinkhole things), giving The Scar its name.

Kinloch Rannoch

City on Vergesig near The Scar (~25 km northwest of one of the mining areas)

Chukchi Sea

Large, oblong inland sea located in the southwest of Vergesig.

Salish Sea

Deep, double-round (sort of like a squat figure 8) inland sea located in the middle-east of Vergesit

Interesting and/or important locations on Antaras's second-largest continent and the home of the Tyree family

Denau is the fourth-largest city on Antaras. It is an intensely metropolitan coastal city, comparable to a prettier New York City, with many multi-story buildings. The architecture of Denau is particularly clever, as many of the buildings are sculpted in such a way as to provide multi-story gardens and parks above ground.

Denau is situated on the western coast of the second-largest continent on Antaras, Lial. As a result, it has state of the art seaport and spaceport facilities. Regularly-scheduled shuttle service is available around the clock to and from Denau, linking her with most of the other major and secondary cities on the planet.

Denau is particularly expensive for Antaras due to the sheer number of people who wish to live there. Denau is widely reknown as the cultural center of Antaras, and many diplomats and off-world embassies maintain offices there as well as in the capital.

Orianna Tyree, Venn's older sister, maintains a residence (a penthouse apartment on one of the high-rise buildings) in Denau.

Ialain is a moderately-sized city located in the middle of the mid-latitudes of Lial, placing it roughly 2,500 kilometers from Denau. Ialain maintains a reasonably-sized and reasonably-outfitted spaceport comparable to most Rim-world spaceports.

Ialain is famous for its diapada, a thick, savory bread-and-meat dish vaguely similar to a meaty piroshki. It was a "farmer's meal" for ages, and Ialain's rich agricultural heritage led to the development of hundreds of varieties of diapada.

The Dockside

The Dockside is a moderately-sized family restaurant and pub located on the north side of Ialain's spaceport. It has a wonderful variety of very high-end diapada and hosts a variety of local beers and ales. It is rather noisy and a tad expensive, but it is also clean and maintains a reasonable standard of security.

Davin's Shipping

Kane's contact Davin Finnell maintains an import-export business located on the western side of the Ialain Spaceport. This is also a front for his smuggling operations, which are low-key and low-volume but reasonably profitable.

Closest "city" (and a relatively small city at that) to Tyree manor house. Roughly 1,400 kilometers from Denau.

Tyree Manor

Venn Tyree's family maintains a manor house (owned by his father) roughly 1,500 km south of Denau. The manor sits on around 3 square kilometers of forested and be-laked real estate. The manor has been in the family for over three centuries; no one even really remembers who first bought the land and built the sprawling manor house.

East coast of Lial, roughly 6,000 kilometers from Denau and 4,500 from Ialain. Smaller city but still large.

Very "university" city. Mid-sized but has 5 separate universities with more than 300,000 students in total population. A little less than 1,000 kilometers from Altona.

Antaran Supercaldera

"nature preserve" with Teivas, Lial the nearest city; kind of like Lial's Yellowstone. Teivas University maintains a few research outposts throughout for biological, geological sciences departments. Nature preserve is more than ten thousand square kilometers.

Extremely large and very round inland sea in the south of Lial.

Antaran Government

The Antaran government is a complex beast evolved over hundreds of years. In fact, the origins of the current governmental system lie back in the days of distinct nation-states. Over time, the nation-states on Antaras formed a global council to which all member nations could send a certain number of delegates; these delegates set policy recommendations for their home states based on a global perspective. As the global council evolved and individual nation-states became less and less powerful in comparison, the national governments were subsumed into the global ruling body, which over time evolved into the current Antaran Ruling Council.
The Antaran government is semi-divided against itself as a sort of self-check. The main body of the government, the Antaran Senate, the is made up of delegates from all of "Antaras." These delegates are elected to represent various districts, in sum accounting for all of the Antaran states and territories (including nearby off-world colonies). Many of these states still reflect similar borders to the nations from which they were derived. Each state or territory is allotted a certain number of delegates based on a complex formula that includes population represented, economic power, and other factors. The smallest states elect 3 delegates to the Senate; the largest may elect dozens divided up amongst various internal districts. Senators serve for 6-year terms with 1/3 of the 330-seat Senate up for election every 2 years. The Antaran Senate is responsible for all global/interplanetary legislation on Antaras and oversees the global budget.
Senior Senators may choose to compete in an appointment/election cycle at the end of their term to be elevated to the Antaran Ruling Council. The Ruling Council becomes an executive oligarchy tasked with enforcing the laws put into place by the rest of the Senate. As such, the Ruling Council has no direct say in legislative matters, though council members are often involved in the drafting of legislative proposals. Membership in the Ruling Council is for a term of 6 years. The council seats only 13 members. Both the appointment/election process and the formula for Council eligibility are relatively complex affairs.
The Antaran government also maintains a third branch, a global Judiciary. The Judiciary has seen the least change in its duties from its original charter (it started life as a sort of global court where nations could safely and securely air international grievances). The Judiciary is made up of 13 members, the same as the Ruling Council. The Judiciary may overturn Senate legislation by a majority vote. Judiciary members are elected for 10-year terms. The requirements to become eligible to campaign for the Judiciary are the most stringent of all of the government bodies and generally include at least 20 years of service in a lower court with a spotless (or nearly so) record.
Finally, there is an odd-man-out "fourth branch" of the Antaran global government, the
Antaran Military. The Antaran military maintains its odd position because of the
historical unwillingness of the old nation-states to give up their standing armies. As a
result, the military arm was one of the last aspecs of the government to be globalized. In
peacetime, the Antaran military's highest branch (officially the Antaran Military Council
but still widely referred to as Fleet Command) has only advisory powers. The 7 directors
of Antaras's 7 separate military arms have significant access to the members of the Ruling
Council but have no official influence over the Ruling Council's policy decisions. In times of war, however (which must be declared and periodically renewed by the Antaran Senate), the Antaran Military Council roughly swaps places with the Ruling Council, taking on the leading role while the Ruling Council generally advises. This isn't a full swap, however, as the Ruling Council maintains its policymaking powers during wartime.

Antaran Military

The seven branches of the Antaran military structure are:

  1. Antaran Space Command: Responsible for all primary military spacecraft. Trained to operate as an offensive and a defensive force.
  2. Antaran Army: Responsible for all Antaran infantry and armor, including landing craft. Trained to operate as a traditional invasion force.
  3. Antaran Navy: Responsible for all Antaran marine vessels both on-world and off-world. The smallest arm of the Antaran military and mostly relegated to antismuggling, exploratory, and anti-poaching/anti-piracy activities.
  4. Antaran Expeditionary Force: A lightly-armored fast-attack force trained for rapid strikes against enemy forces. Many AEF soldiers are highly trained in ship-to-ship boarding and rapid planetary insertion. The AEF maintains its own small fleet of spacecraft including fighters and a small number of capital ships.
  5. Antaran Intelligence Services: Acknowledged to exist, but all mission details are considered extremely sensitive. Even the capital expenditures of the AIS are highly classified. Most Antarans assume that the AIS is primarily involved in espionage, though some believe it may also occasionally be used for darker missions such as state-sanctioned assassinations.
  6. Antaran Defense Force: The Antaran Defense Force maintains ground, air, and space capabilities to defend Antaras and her sovereign territories from any invading forces. The ADF is easily the largest and most varied branch of the Antaran military, though ASC manages to out-spend the ADF most years due to their larger fleet of spacecraft.
  7. Antaran Merchant Defense: The only semi-civilian branch of the Antaran military, the AMD operates full military patrols of primary Antaran trade routes as an antipiracy initiative. Civilian merchants may test and screen for a position of "civilian attache" to the AMD, granting them certain weapons privileges within Antaran space and binding them to render assistance should they happen upon a stricken merchant vessel. Members are also granted priority assistance when carrying cargo or returning from carrying cargo (officially, "when operating in a legal and commercial capacity").

Antaran Economy

Antaras is a lucky world, blessed with a larger than normal percentage of rare earth minerals. As a result, Antaras is an important manufacturer and exporter of high-tech devices, particularly starship drive components. Particularly on Vergesig, Antarans have ready access to the normally-rare elements and minerals required in these sensitive components, making Antaran hyperdrive systems universally reknown for their efficiency and precision. These rare minerals are also prevalent in the system's asteroid fields; many mining companies supplement their terrestrial mining efforts with asteroid and other offworld mining interests.

Antaras also maintains a large community of artists. The global government provides millions of credits annually in artistic grants and loans, many of which are repaid via export of the artists' creations. Antaran art is prized for its "clean" or "symmetric" feel.
