Sundtar the Weather

This session covers the downtime activities of the PCs while they are overwintering in Sundtar Agamm. The PCs have 29 total weeks to kill.

TODO - ROUGH NOTES TO BE DEALT WITH

See the audio or PC-captured notes from 7/26/2014 and update this page for how we handled these items:

  • The bar bet that Darias and Aida made early on.
  • Darias's presentation of Saul's armor.
  • Darias's first flight.
  • Maleos and Saul's ritual performance.
  • Briefly play out Aida talking to Maleos about what she's been up to - Carol will have to lead this.
  • Deal with experience gained over winter for all PCs.

STILL NEED TO RUN THIS, BUT HERE ARE SOME NOTES

earlier on, need to run meeting with Aida, Darias, Capt Henriette (She's very straight-laced, official, proper, and a lot like his father. She actually has a dagger that isn't standard uniform issue; it looks like decent work.) - they won the bet to meet her, so they were intro'ed to her. Darias trying to get access to armory, cannonball, or at least a little powder. (Okay, Darias would probably start by saying that he's a smith who'd like to examine fine dharven weapon designs. He's never seen some of these materials and designs, and they're quite impressive. He'll point out the dagger and comment on the excellent work, and ask who made it. {Apparently, she did. It's a hobby.} He'll ask her if he can examine it. He'll ask if she was apprenticed as a smith. {Never apprenticed; she seems regretful of this} He'll ask her if dharven can get apprenticeships later in their lives, because the dagger shows real talent. {"Sometimes. But I have a good career here."} {So, basically, you dont' think you can flatter her into actually showing you the secret stuff, but you do notice a small spill of powder on the ground outside one of the buildings. With a proper bluff check, you can sweet-talk her while walking around and sneak a sample while she's looking at some of your work} Gotcha. I will be asking about the arms and armor in the room… he's curious about the perspective of someone who can make them but also might have to wear and use them. What are the benefits of certain armor shapes, etc…))

The Fighters (Aida and Yoshirou-Mura)

Aida and Yoshirou-Mura develop a steady schedule during the downtime. Largely, they wake in the morning, break their fasts, then head out to "work" with the guards. During the winter, they develop new training regimens and teach many groups of guards (and some civilians, including the bar matron and her daughters) new fighting and self-defense techniques. Aida also drills the dharven on strength training while Yoshirou-Mura works with them on balance and agility exercises.

By mid-afternoon, Yoshirou-Mura and Aida generally break for the day, allowing the guards to get back in time for their shifts. Aida usually spends the afternoons training Moxie, often with Yoshirou-Mura's help. Should the two need to perform any other tasks, e.g., shopping, exploring the city, etc., they generally do it during this time. Sometimes they drill with one another as well, working on brushing up one another's skills in unfamiliar weapons. In particular, Yoshirou-Mura spends some time teaching Aida how to shoot a bow properly or fight with sword and dagger, and Aida teaches Yoshirou-Mura more about using her shield and sword.

In the evenings, Aida and Yoshirou-Mura have been heading around the town to socialize with the dharven.

The Crafters (Darias, Maleos, and Saul)

Week 1

Once freed of his other responsibilities, Darias begins working on finding a blacksmith's shop where he can work. He learns the lay of the city and meets some smiths. He also learns that he must work as an unpaid apprentice for one of the smiths for a short period to vet his abilities before being granted a license to operate a shop in the city.

As promised, Maleos spends much of the first week in the city working with the dharven wizards on the Compass. He is escorted to them daily and demonstrates the Compass repeatedly, allowing them to cast a variety of divinations as they watch. They collect data for that week and then leave him be while they analyze and examine what they've recorded.

For the first few weeks, Saul is crafting magical items for himself and for Yoshirou-Mura. He crafts himself a Wisdom-enhancing amulet using the amulet given to him by Rido in Hallvar as the base item. He then helps Yoshirou-Mura trade in her chit and some additional money for appropriate materials and builds her some arrows of eyes, a cloak of aelphinkind, a pair of boots of aelphinkind, and bracers of armor +1.

Week 2

Darias spends the second week beginning to earn his license to operate as a blacksmith in Sundtar Agamm. Much of this time is spent working increasingly complex pieces for the master smith.

During the second week, Maleos speaks to various dharven priests about their religious views, the planes, their gods, and other related topics. TODO Dale has IMs with notes on this topic.

Week 3

During the third week, Darias finally earns his license to operate in the city as an independent blacksmith. He finds a currently-idle but well-stocked smithy that he can rent for the winter, costing him a total of 580 gp. He begins his work by finishing Saul's armor, presenting it to Saul during an evening with the party in the inn.

During the third week, with his commitments to the dharven leadership resolved, he takes a week off of his research to learn about the city. He finds out about the low cost of lead (roughly 4 cp/lb, meaning a 2-4 lb square-foot sheet can be quite inexpensive). He also finds and rents out a large room in the city that he can use to set up a proper research lab so that he can effectively research spells during the winter. In order to pay for the initial fees, he works some magic for various dharven merchants and whatnot. He pays 300 gp all told to set up his research lab.

Week 4

During the fourth week, Darias begins heavy work on a series of models for his glider. He builds a series of progressively larger test models, culminating in the end of the week with a half-scale model that he drop-tests off a building with sandbags attached.

During the fourth week, Maleos starts to work with the dharven wizards on the spells they'd promised to teach him. TODO specifics. He also starts applying for permission to work in the city as a wizard.

Week 5

During the fifth week, Darias continues his heavy work on his glider. He builds a full-scale version, drop tests it a couple of times, and then finally ends the week by calling together everyone for an actual test. He jumps of a 100' cliff. TODO run this - safe flight, a little tiring, botched landing - too fast, stumbles, faceplants, but the glider itself is just a bit scuffed up.

Week 6

During week six, Darias uses the information he gleaned from his test flight to begin working on refinements to his glider. He spends a full week carefully reworking some of the strapping and trimming some of the weight off some of the spars. He then puts it aside to work on as more ideas come to him, occasionally taking it back out to drop- or live-test again.

During the sixth week, Maleos begins working days as a city wizard, performing spells and enchanting simple objects for commission. He spends nearly half his voucher, 2,350 gp, to commission two scrolls (dismissal and banishment) and send them to the aelphin priestess he'd met in Akihito-Remi. Over the course of his visit, he'll turn around a 2,700 gp profit working roughly 8 hours a day as a wizard. He also starts researching how to build an object that can interface with the Compass, allowing him to ask questions without endangering himself.

During the sixth week, Saul rents out a space with a well-stocked apothecary who agrees to allow him to do alchemical and magical research on the premises. He also roams around the city purchasing a collection of rare herbs for his research. He spends 100 gold pieces to acquire supplies over and above those he already has.

Week 7

Darias finding companionship - during evenings, starting week 7. spending a few dozen gold to buy rounds and whatnot. "Between your birdman stories and your freeness with beer, you can find yourself a like-minded dharven girl in the mood for a little fun". Also, spent w/ Saul learning about explosive powder of the dharven - Saul reverse engineered recipe and taught Darias how to make it (Hmm… Darias is torn between responding with "How bad could it possibly be (said with smile)," "Well, I certainly wouldn't want to get involved in anything dangerous," or "You do know I just jumped off of a mountain last week, right?" :-) {"Yes, well, maybe dont' mix this stuff up without my supervision for a little while despite your risk-taking nature. Your hands are more useful where they are now than they would be across the room."} ). Learns 250 gp ea to reverse engineer (splitting cost w/Saul).

Maleos continues to work days as a city wizard business, researching his compass interface device during the nights.

Saul working with Darias on teaching him how to make explosive powder. Spent 250 gp of own money at this point reverse engineering the recipe and teaching it to Darias.

Week 8

Darias experimenting with Saul on powder - 125 gp cost.

Maleos finally finishes an initial device that allows him to interface with the compass. The socket involves lead, virag, emerald, sapphire, ruby, and obsidian. It costs 1,500 gp for the crafted item and 2,500 gp for the enchantments. The device allows him to ask a question of the Compass and cast a spell into it, getting a result based on the power of the spell. The device is damaged with each casting. It can absorb 50 spell levels before burning out completely, but it prevents Maleos from suffering backlash, acting as a valve that prevents excessive spell drain.

Week 9

Darias experimenting with Saul on powder - 125 gp cost.

TODO Maleos 2 days working on 2,000 gp version of coldcrystal - 20 fps AV, command-word activated, no concentration, records 15 min video before full, requires skin contact. Uses it on asking a couple of questions - TODO Dale has IM. Then 3 days and 300 gp on Saul teaching him Make Whole. Then 1 day tracking down the conspirators who tried to kill him. Then 1 day peddling some wares for money and fixing up his new device after asking it some significant questions.

Week 10

Darias spends about 2 days this week tinkering with the glider. The rest of the time, he's experimenting with the explosive powder at a cost of 250 gp.

TODO Maleos - Starting at week 10, spend 14 days exchanging more spells with the wizard - maleos teaches him 0, 2, 3, 4 in exchange for a 0, 3, 4. Maleos gets Over Here!, Dimensional Anchor, and Clairaudience/Clairvoyance. He teaches Hesitation, Skill Sharing, Illusory Script, and Stoneskin.

During week 10, Saul picks up his previous experimentation in his alchemical lab.

Week 11

Darias spends about 2 days this week tinkering with the glider. The rest of the time, he's experimenting with the explosive powder at a cost of 250 gp.

TODO Maleos - Finishing during week 11, completing 14 days exchanging more spells with the wizard - maleos teaches him 0, 2, 3, 4 in exchange for a 0, 3, 4. Maleos gets Over Here!, Dimensional Anchor, and Clairaudience/Clairvoyance. He teaches Hesitation, Skill Sharing, Illusory Script, and Stoneskin. This burns up the entirety of the week.

During week 11, Saul picks up his previous experimentation in his alchemical lab. He manages a final breakthrough with his memory flower, consuming half of the flower's petals to brew a concoction for himself. He tells no one and does not take the concoction… yet.

Week 12

Darias spends about 2 days this week tinkering with the glider. The rest of the time, he's experimenting with the explosive powder at a cost of 250 gp.

Maleos: side note - guards caught 2 conspirators; apparently, they were trying to make deals with demons. Rest of conspirators escaped through secret tunnels. week 12, 13, 14, 15 spent with Saul working on ritual to attack WTW - ready for testing at end of 15, but need sample to test on

Week 16

Darias spends a couple of days at the beginning of this week working on some further refinements to his glider. He also stumbles across an odd store among the smithies that sells even odder merchandise, three varieties of what the dharven call mine-air. For the rest of the week, he takes a bit of a break in the evenings to begin developing relationships with the orcs near the inn, trying to learn their language and a bit about them.

Maleos: week 16, teaching noob dharven spells (class of 6; shrink item, arcane sight, hesitation)

During this week, Saul spends about half his time mixing up some useful alchemical items and secreting them about his person. He also starts talking to various people in the the dharven clergy about dharven religious stories, parables, and other sundry information.

Week 17

This week, Darias splits his time between working at his smithy and developing better relationships with the orcs. He manages to become friendly enough with them to learn their language fully and to begin to learn a little bit about some minor aspects of their culture. He also begins training Torin for a good 4-6 hours a day, trying to teach him some new tricks. TODO successfully teach 1 complex "trick" or a handful of simple commands

Maleos: week 17, 2 days teaching noob dharven spells (class of 6; expeditious retreat, feather fall). Half a day after class over, sitting in room rocking back and forth - He is thinking: "Dad… Esme… This is it… I used everything you taught me… Everything. And when it wasn't enough… I did it my own way. I used magic to cheat. And… it worked. I used my powers for good. I used my most horribly manipulative powers for good! AND I GOT AWAY WITH IT! I honestly don't know if you should be proud or horrified!" Maleos then spends 2 days negotiating with the dharven about performing a ritual for them for pay. For the last three days of the week, he starts working with Saul to research this ritual.

Saul spends the first half of this week developing various alchemical items and secreting them about his person for his personal use. He also continues working with the dharven clergy to learn more about their religion. Saul spends the last 3 days of this week working on a ritual with Maleos.

Week 18

This week, Darias continues training Torin. He also works, though reduced hours, at the smithy due to the time training Torin is taking from his schedule. TODO successfully teach 1 complex "trick" or a handful of simple commands

Maleos spends this week researching a ritual that he can cast for the dharven for pay, a ritual to improve their defensive wall.

Saul spends this week researching a mending ritual with Maleos.

Week 21

This week, Darias continues training Torin. He also works, though reduced hours, at the smithy due to the time training Torin is taking from his schedule. TODO successfully teach 1 complex "trick" or a handful of simple commands. During this week, Darias stages a flight over part of the city in an attempt to up his notoriety and make it known that he's built a non-magical single-man glider.

Week 22

This week, Darias continues training Torin. He also works, though reduced hours, at the smithy due to the time training Torin is taking from his schedule. TODO successfully teach 1 complex "trick" or a handful of simple commands

Maleos spends this week researching a ritual that he can cast for the dharven for pay, a ritual to improve their defensive wall. Having reached an agreement on terms with the dharven, he and Saul begin casting the ritual the last two days of this week. Developing the ritual has cost him 2,500 gp; casting it will cost him another 10,000 gp. The dharven agree to loan him the 10,000 through a private (merchant) lender, paying 65,000 gp to Maleos and Saul at the end of the week. The loan repayment will cost 10,500 gp, leaving Maleos and Saul 54,500 to split.

Saul spends this week researching a mending ritual with Maleos. The last two days of the week, he and Maleos begin the ritual casting. Developing the ritual has cost Saul 2,500 gp. Maleos bears the burden of the casting cost through an agreement with the dharven, for which he and Maleos will each net 27,250 gp.

Week 23

During this week, Darias spends a significant amount of time trying to scare up some commissioned work so that he can make more money. He invests 300 gp to build an elaborate and fancy puzzle-box to put on display in his shop and continued to shop around for commissions. The list price of the puzzle-box is 600 gp.

Having reached an agreement on payment terms with the dharven, Maleos continues casting the ritual, finishing the day before the end of the week. Exhausted, he and Saul then do little but rest and recuperate for the last day of the week. Maleos suffers 8 hp dmg, 10 Int dmg, and 10 Wis dmg in backlash from the ritual, requiring a little over a day to fully heal. See writeup of followup here.

Saul finishes assisting Maleos in casting the ritual this week, taking the last day of the week off to rest after the ritual has been completed. Saul suffers 20 hp dmg, 8 Wis dmg, and 8 Int dmg in backlash from the ritual, requiring about 16 hours to fully heal.

Week 24

By this point, Darias has managed to scare up three pieces of commissioned work. The first is a larger and more ornate version of the puzzle-box that must be built to particularly heavy-duty specifications; this will be used as a safe. The second is a gilded coat-of-arms made up of a shield and twin axes inlaid with gold and platinum; the shield must be carefully lacquered and jeweled to represent the crest of a prominent dharven family. The third is a heavily-decorated gilded dressing-table.

  • Puzzle-box safe: 11,500 gp profit
  • Coat of arms: 4,500 gp profit
  • Dressing table: 3,000 gp profit

Darias begins working on these pieces early in the week.

During this week, Maleos tracks down a dharven beastmaster and pays him 600 gp to begin training him about nashorn. He does this because of Darias's thoughts about buying a nashorn and wagon.

Saul spends this week finishing his alchemical research and manufacturing this week. All told, he's spent 1,500 gp on alchemical concoctions that he's secreted about his person.

Week 25

During the week, Darias is still working on the three commissioned pieces he'd scrounged up as of the previous week.

Maleos continues training with a dharven beastmaster on nashorn this week.

Saul spends this week working on magical and alchemical crafting for himself. He makes himself a handy haversack and adds a +1 to his armor, along with building some alchemical explosives for the party.

Week 27

During the week, Darias is still working on the three commissioned pieces he'd scrounged up as of Week 24.

Maleos spends the first 4 days crafting Ring of True Strike 5/day. After that, he meets up with the dharven wizard again to purchase a few more spells before he leaves. He starts learning Stone Shape, Charm Monster, Summon Monster IV, and Glitterdust. The total cost to him is 1160 gp.

This week, Saul spends the first 2 days on finishing enchanting his armor. Once that is finished, he begins adding to the enchantments already on his amulet, enhancing it further.

Week 28

During the week, Darias is still working on the three commissioned pieces he'd scrounged up as of Week 24.

Maleos continues studying Stone Shape, Charm Monster, Summon Monster IV, and Glitterdust with the dharven.

Saul finalizes the enchantments on his amulet this week.

Week 29

Darias spends about half the last week working on his glider. The rest of the week he spends packing up the shop, selling off the rest of his wares and tools, and preparing to leave town.

Maleos continues studying Stone Shape, Charm Monster, Summon Monster IV, and Glitterdust with the dharven, finishing up midway through the week. After that, he spends his time (about the last 3 days) packing up the shop, selling off some wares and tools, and preparing to leave town.

This week, having gone over it at least a dozen times without finding any obvious risks, Saul finally decides to take the memory-flower concoction he'd crafted earlier. Having done so, he spends a day or two dissecting what happens as the result of his taking the draught. He had been holding off due to apprehension at what might happen, and he has to deal with the reality of the situation. Once that is done, Saul spends a couple of days closing up shop and preparing to go, leaving him the final couple of days of the week to wander the town, bidding farewell to those few people he'd spent time with outside of the party during the winter.
